Village Fair Poem by Marilyn Shepperson

Village Fair

On the large field, called the village green
Surrounded by hedges, houses and trees
That crowd together like comfortable old friends
Stand the pillory and stocks
In which wrongdoers of old, used to be put
But today willing volunteers will stand instead
People will hurl wet sponges at these brave folk
To raise money for charity
There'll be sideshows in plenty
Where you'll stand a good chance
Of winning a balloon, doll or teddy
And in tents, as large as houses
There's friendly rivalry to see
Who'll win the prize for the best in the show
Outside collie dogs put sheep between fences
Young riders wait impatiently for the gymkhana
Their fat ponies dwarfed by gentle tall shires
Whose horse brasses shine in the sun
You can buy candy floss, toffee apples, homemade cakes
And other good things to eat are for sale
At ridiculously low prices
There's also tea, coffee or beer for the grown ups
Milk or squash for those not yet old enough
The fun will go on past the sun's going down
When the bonfire will be lit by the oldest person there
Now the long awaited bar-b- que will begin
And all the old favourite songs will be sung once again.
