Warrigu Poem by Francis Duggan

Warrigu

The black tribes lived there centuries ago
By those rocky hills where heath and bracken grow
One still can sense the presence in the place
Of the spirits of this Land's first human race.

Yes one can sense their presence in the air
Their presence around the Grampians everywhere
They had their meetings and Corroborees
By those volcanic hills in the shadows of the trees.

I came here from a Country far away
And I feel a stranger in this Land today
An ancient Land as old as time maybe
That has an indigenous history.

Bush creatures who are more active at night
Grey kangaroos and wallabies can be seen in evening's fading light
Their ancestors fled from the dark hunters deadly spears
And they have lived here for centuries of years.

At Warrigu a place as old as time
By artists sketched and that inspire poets to rhyme
In the scrubland around the volcanic hill
It seems indeed as if time has stood still.
