Way Back When

'Paphos' and 'Cyprus'
were poetic for 'down there',
way-back-when.
They humor us now.
They would have humored them then,
round 1590,
when Ancients' morals astonished -
and were debated and put on show,
in such as 'Love's Pilgrims',
whose musician-poet I particularly champion -
later, Doctor, Thomas Campion.

Psst: My champion later spurned rhyme, I know,
but you can say
Fifteen Nine O.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
25.7.20. Campion 1567-1620.

Paphos on Cyprus was where Aphrodite was particularly worshipped.

I can't find 'Love's Pilgrims' on the internet. It starts: 'What fair pomp have I spied of glittering ladies'. It's in my 'Oxford Book of Sixteenth Century Verse'.1955 reprint. The relevant verse starts: 'But stay! now I discern they go on a pilgrimage/ Towards Love's holy land, fair Paphos and Cyprus.'
