We Are Poem by Connie Wine

We Are

Dear Humans,

We have roamed this life for so many years
free to travel where we wanted
at one time we were given everything we needed
and we have tried to leave you alone

When we choose our mates it is for life
can you say the same
we raise our young and teach them how to hunt
must we now teach them how to hunt you

We play in the shadows of the moon
we sing our songs so hauntingly
and we try to live our lives the way we were meant to

You have crossed over into our territory
forcing us to cross into yours
you have killed our food without thought
of how we would feed our families

So do not be surprised when we take your stock
but we do it to survive
we are not like those of you who just do it for sport

We ask that you leave us be
so we do not have to go to war with you
it would be a war no one would win

Sincerely,
You know who we are
