A Tear That Fell Poem by Connie Wine

A Tear That Fell

A strange land is where my feet roam today
people who speak a different language are who I hear
homes that have been bombed by life itself
destruction everywhere my eyes wander

Not sure why we are even here
are we really helping this country heal
or are our footprints burying this land

I was told that I am being sent here
to protect the country where I was born
but my mother, my father, my sister, my brother
are not here and what happens to them

The heartache of the mothers that I see here
I do not want my mother to feel
the broken bodies lying in the street
I pray will never be my family

Confusion is in every face I see
fear is in the eyes of the children
how can they possibly understand
what is happening to them

I carry a gun and have been taught to kill
maybe someone who has really done me no harm
my prayers every day are the same
Dear Lord, let us learn from our mistakes

Tears fall as I walk up and down the road
my heart feels like it is ready to burst
fear and sympathy are like twin companions
that shadow my spirit and soul

Friends and family are so far away
will I ever see them again
will I become a distant memory
to those I love and have been sent here to protect

Dear Lord, open the hearts of all those you can
teach them to care once again
let this people who are torn apart
come together once again

So no more tears will fall
