We Are Now Counted On Poem by Sarah Ferguson

We Are Now Counted On

We are now Counted on
By: Sarah Ferguson

We are generations past the wars that our grandparents fought,
The bloody battles and horrific sights our history lessons taught.
Close to losing all men and women who were there,
The one's who own the experiences and stories we now share.
We are now counted on.

First, we will thank them all.

We will thank them for leaving their homes to join trenches and disease,
For losing their childhood, naivety, peace, and securities.
Let's thank them for giving up their work, their family, and their friends,
For bearing rotten food, heavy packs, and marching days on end.
Then we will thank them for marching on when their comrades were torn apart,
For dying, and surviving, all bearing broken heart.
We are now counted on.

Second, we will not forget.

We are counted on to carry forward the stories from those who tell,
About the sacrifices that were made, the tears, and all the hell.
We will memorize these stories and keep them in our hearts,
To our children we will share when our soldiers part.
We are now counted on.

Last, we will be proud.

On this day I vow, I will never sleep in late,
I will not forget the significance of this historic date.
I will think about my grandpa or someone that he knew,
And thank them for where we are now and what they have gone through.
We will be proud of our grandparents, veterans, and those in heaven,
Thank them, never forget, and be proud always and November Eleven.

We are now counted on.
