We Cannot Change The Past Poem by Francis Duggan

We Cannot Change The Past

We cannot change the past that so happens to be true
But an apology should be given to those to whom it is due
And for wrongs of the past the Turkish Government to the Armenian people should apologize
But if that does come about then that would be a surprise.

For all people much the same they only look for good things about themselves to celebrate
Though an apology for past wrongs could help to heal the wounds of hate
That have been festering for decades in the hearts of the descendants of the dead
But few apologies for past wrongs we have heard of or read.

Is there a race on Earth for all races much the same
Who can say that their ancestors have never committed any acts of shame
But an apology for past wrongs some shame on our pride can bring
Of the praises of our heroes of the past we would much prefer to sing.

If the Turkish Government to the Armenian People did apologize their gesture would not be weak but strong
Though suppose words as such can never right a wrong
It could help to heal the wounds that have lived from decades gone
But because of words unsaid old hatreds will live on.
