We Could Be Better Promises Poem by Obiaeli Ifediirichukwu Victor

We Could Be Better Promises

Life, from what I can tell is already hell for her
Life, from what I've lived is already survival for him
Women trying to get past unwanted attentions
Men trying to grow into not being a hoe
Women trying to have a say in the public
Men trying to control their lives
Women trying not to sound saucy cos of how the society handles them
Men trying to make those they love envied by the society
From all these struggles and bustle came you
Out of nowhere popping like a bubble on the surface of the sea
You must have thought...
"Many men should have enticed her with money or looks"
So your best way to raising down those wals is by being the "Mr. Nice guy"
You bump into her life with the image of a helper
One she suddenly couldn't control her feelings about
You boast to your friends that you have finally gotten her
And they feel happy for you calling you a champ
A lady who had dreams suddenly incurred problems on herself
Just because you presented the right picture on your way in
The one who always loved you and could go lengths for you...
Out of nowhere, you have become her worst nightmare
Causing her emotional pains, pushing her against the wall
She was a beautiful young woman all along
Not until you gambled your way into her life and broke her
Walls that protected her from men's evil darts
In a matter of months got melted away all because of the man she'd thought you were
You who was always loving, caring and supportive
All of a sudden started turning into the devil she'd been praying not to meet
You've promised to love and make her happy.
Now that you've got her? What's popping?
All because she's now yours... You suddenly don't chase after her
You care less about how happy and satisfied she is
The curse we men have believed to be following us you've clinged onto
"Men are like that" you'll always say.
Forgetting you were never like that before she was yours
All of a sudden, the "God thank you for this guy"
Has become "God please help me to keep going"
A girl who had all her love to give
Because of your lack of control over yourself...
You've made her and injury with blood always dripping.
Your promises to be there for her has developed legs with the winds
You've made her regret leaving her Ex
You've made her regret making a choice
We men should learn to be better men
Claiming a curse as our portion does not leave us any better
Learn to love and to keep to promises
Learn to make her prefer you despite all odds
Learn to lead a life of hope and loyalty
Learn to be the man and not just any man
We have a lot to learn
But first, we have to learn not to break tender loving hearts
We all have to learn not to make promises we can't fulfil
We have to learn to be more responsible men
Let's learn to keep what we love and who loves us
Let's learn to be our own promises
Though some women can't change even after all these
But believe me...
You're better not being a "hoe"
