We Should All Be Feminist, Should We? Poem by Samuel Segun Toluwalase

We Should All Be Feminist, Should We?

Dear Mrs, your little writing I read
Compelling I must say
For reading it I had dread
Permit me a voice here if I may

The thing you do with the words
Makes being a feminist adoring
I do agree with the stories I had to write down some of the words
But your emphasis on the female perception really became boring

"I knew that because I was female, I would automatically have to prove my worth"
Who said so, whose permission did you sought?
You do you and tell the stories like that of Kambili
Close your eyes and ears to society rants and let the girls learn like Kambili

Let the ego of masculinity decorate the shrines
Fill the churches and possess the lands
Let their hardness and ego roar
To make little girl shrink themselves and become smaller.

Maybe by then there will be no more stories
By then as is the case now, consumed by ego, narrowed by their masculinity
Damned the minds to queens
Taking from the lettering of beautiful stories

We should all be female humans
So stories can be re-written
We should all be female humans
So that life in itself wont be all about the male gaze

We should all be feminist
I think we should
We should all be feminist
What say you
