What Becomes Of Her? Poem by nisha dyrene

What Becomes Of Her?

There goes the little girl
Holding her head high
Under the weight of shame that you spew from your eyes
Give her two days and she’ll be crawling
She’s not that strong you know
She’s not all that brave

Sharp tongues tattle tales
Old friends become strangers
Scoff at the unwed mother
As if you’re still chaste
As if you’ve never made a mistake
How dare she show her face in public
How dare she walk alone
What a slut
I heard that she…
And feel better about yourself
No time to figure out why

She’s just a silly little girl
Trying to play dress up
Didn’t you know?
No? Oh well, never mind.

She just made an important decision
Just as you turned your head away
Did you see it?
No? Oh well, never mind.

What does it matter, anyway?
She’ll be running away tomorrow
When her mom is away
She won’t ever come back.

Did you know you were that powerful?
No? Oh well, never mind.
