What Bullying Does Poem by Hannah Diane Williams

What Bullying Does

He comes to school
With a smile on his face.
He leaves with not the smallest grin.
Every day he's tormented
With his classmates' taunting words.
They call him 'Nerd', 'Dork', 'Four Eyes',
And so many more.
His little heart can't take much more.
Each night, after his mother tooks him in,
His eyes fill with tears
That fall to the floor
And soak his bed.
He doesn't want to be in so much pain,
But the taunting voices are in his head again,
So he grabs his flashlight and a book,
And reads until he falls asleep.
The next day at school,
The bullies are at it again.
Teasing him, Taunting him,
Tormenting his fragile soul.
He wishes they would leave.
He hates them, you see.
But he can't stand up for himself.
Nobody steps into help.
They don't care that he's so alone
And he needs a friend.
So, during recess each day,
He sits in the shade,
Reading a book.
It's the only way he has to escape.
In his heart, he knows,
He can't escape this forever,
But for right now,
He can.
Every day, it's the same.
They hate him.
Each day, when he gets home,
He fakes a smile for his parents
So they don't know anything's wrong.
Why does he have to be in so much pain?
Why does no one stand up for the poor kid?
Everyone's so selfish,
They don't do anything to step in.
The teachers have no clue
What heck he is put through
Everyons so worried
About what other people think
What if this little boy decided his life wasn't worth it?
What would we do then?
We would each say,
'I wish we could have done something.'
Or 'What a freak...who wants to end their life? '
I am telling you,
If we don't do something now,
This world is going to get worse
And worse and worse.
So smile at everyone,
Talk to the new kid,
Make friends with the loner.
It doesn't take much...
Just a smile and 'Hello.'
Who knows?
You just may save a life.
