What Is A Poet? Poem by Denis Martindale

'What is a poet? ' some would ask, when reading what they wrote,
'And why should they attempt the task, as if we should take note? '
Yet I can answer using rhyme, as millions have before,
That poetry can prove sublime, and thrill us to the core.
From poems sprang the songs of love, and hymns that Christ would sing,
From poems sprang wise words enough, as if new life to bring.
Amazing Grace, How Great Thou Art, were these from Heaven sent?
Each called to somehow play their part, and not by accident?

What is a poet? Think on this. Reflect on thoughts they share.
A poet strives to share the bliss that comes through answered prayer.
Or seeks to challenge mortal man, to strive to do what's right,
That's why they do the things they can, and write by day and night.
While others sleep, and dream awhile, some poets stay awake,
Enwrapped in structure, and in style, new poetry to make.
Such that fresh blessings may ensue, beyond the worth of gold,
Like Christians who would share with you the greatest story ever told!
