When A Corrupted Elite Forsake Virtue Poem by Terence George Craddock

When A Corrupted Elite Forsake Virtue

great power
at corrupted fingertips
is often infected

with insulated
security diseases
arrogance

cruelty
inhumanity...
inflicted

upon
the weak
the powerless

Mahatma Gandhi
discarded
safe security

of privilege
wealth suits
to victim wear

common mantle
of people vulnerable
then advocated

non-violent protest
to achieve more enlightened
political change

non-violent protest
worked against the British
who were not prepared

to wash their hands
in oceans of innocent blood
slaughtering people

like splattered crushed bugs

it would not
could not have succeeded
against death

camps Nazi Germany;

one vital constant
remains necessary
opposition courage

morality honour sacrifice
by brave people willing
to claim their human rights;

can achieve change
indifference looking
other ways encourages

cruelty brutality
injustice crimes
against humanity;
