When The Red Leaves Are Falling - For Flight Sergeant James Scott Hogg,21 Yrs Died Gibralter 1944

Springtime has gone unforsaken
Winter's snowflake fills the glen;
My days are sea-waves a-breakin,
Now Europe's at war again.
Your dark locks, your smile sae bewitchin
You melted ma heart tae the core
I wept when I saw you enlisting
When Flight Sergeant Hogg left my door.

Will ye come when the red leaves are fallin'
When blossom is melting like foam?
E'er ye come when the whaups are a-callin,
I'll be here tae welcome ye home.

I ken Jim, yer patriot manner
There's nae white feather for you
Boldly you held Freedom's banner
In honour and valour sae true.
Then a telegram told us your story
The coldest news I e’er read
It read 'Missing in Action' – what glory!
When my husband-to-be is dead!
(Music instrumental....)

O springtime brought celebrations
Great crowds filled every street
'Churchill' was the toast o' the nation
Ah Jim, a' I could do was greet.
They sang 'It's a long way to' somewhere
They sang for the heroes come hame
They sang till my heart felt right sair
No one e’en mentioned your name!

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
This is a true story, written about my Dad's uncle Jim who died in 1944. He lived at Ardwell at the house where the shop is now. It is written in the voice of Jean Lightbody who was engaged to be his wife. I met Jean a few years ago and she told me I was James Scott Hogg's double. His sister jean said the same.........so this is for Jim!
