Where Poem by DAVID TERRY

Where

Where do you go when the love of your life has chosen another?
Another lover, another partner, another friend
When you said you’d be there past the end?
When you looked in her eyes and saw moonlight gleam
And she haunts your dreams with all her schemes?
What do you do when in the morning you awake
And you’re immediately conscious of the break in your heart, in your life
Full of anguish and strife
When you shower and coffee to greet the new sun
And you run your morning run but you realize you’re running nowhere
Fast instead of the somewhere you know you want to be
To be with she
Who still fires your mind, your heart, your soul
And without her your soul feels old, cold, not bold, just rolled
She left with her lies and not even alibis
Leaving you with your cries and your anger outsized
At how you said words you wish you could retrieve
But instead you grieve
You grieve when you think that the moonlight and morn
Are things she will now share with a man who was born
After both of you had long been in your unmet love
Before you had met, you had been so in love
You were so in love with her
Before you had known of her she burrowed into your heart
And there she would stay until you would part
Where do you go when that parting was done
And with it your love and your time in the sun with the one
Who was fair though she wasn’t fair to you
Or even to herself as she accused and blamed you
For the troubles in her life that you only wanted to ease
Relieve, love and bring what you both wanted: peace
Where do you go when instead of the lie
That she told you, instead, you told her goodbye?
