'Who Am I To This City' Poem by Boston Kelley

'Who Am I To This City'

Who am I to this city
Whose streets I do wander?
What is within the minds of
Its citizens as they gaze upon me?
Longing to be assimilated
To their ways fills mine heart,
Yet my soul stands in firm rebellion.

Their language is not on my tongue,
And my thoughts do align not with theirs.
A lone alien am I to them;
An outsider who lacks a place.
Where shall I go to be an alien no more?
With whom shall I converse whose
Language is my own?
This city will not have me;
Another surely must be my home.
