Why Do Writers Write? Poem by Terence George Craddock

Why Do Writers Write?

why do writers write
expending so much energy
through day through night
so often writing late into the night
in wee small hours oh so quiet
chasing will-o'-the-wisp ideas imagery
ever elusive dancing off into infinity
gifting narrative entertainment to humanity

to write or not to write, that is the posed poetic question,
each writer novelist poet, could craft their own unique prose
answer, but do these writers novelists poets really know,
from which vast creative wells their writing sudden springs
do they know when why how they write as a concise answer?
why write why start what was catalyst cause, where do themes

characters styles tensions motifs originate? how do part
time writers poets find the time to write? do they write
late into week nights on weekends? do they sacrifice
rare long hard earned work holidays time out to write write write?
do they write best by day by night alone or in crowded house?
do they write best in a specific season? winter wrapped
up warm by heat warming fire flames warm house cold house?
or do they write best in fever heat in summers burning hot?
