Wild Roses And Raspberry Leaves Poem by Wemdy Adams

Wild Roses And Raspberry Leaves

Rating: 4.0

This January morning's such a dreary grey outside,
The sky is dark and leaden, cold breeze shivering the pines;
A stray damp squirrel plods across the sodden, muddy lawn:
Staying warm in bed beats getting out to greet the dawn.

Eventually rising, I decided to ablute
And in the bathroom I discovered salts that smelled of fruit,
But when I threw them underneath the running water taps,
A floral smell arose to transport me two seasons back.

I saw the roses blooming in the flower beds outside,
Grandifloras, hybrid teas, polyanthas damask white,
Wild roses through the raspberry brambles curled around my mind,
As fragrant, wafting steam did my expectant nosebuds find.

The year is just beginning and the winter death will pass,
The darkness is but transient, the cold is brief though harsh,
Its days are numbered, soon the birds will wake me up at four
And roses wild and raspberries will in the hedgerows grow.
