With Nothing To Do Poem by Shalom Freedman

With Nothing To Do

To be old
And wake
With nothing to do
To have hours before one
Days before one
Perhaps years before one
With nothing to do
To know one is done
And can do no more
To face the emptiness of time
The emptiness of one's own life
The emptiness of one's soul
And to despair beyond despair
To sink beneath sinking
To be alone in the universe
With the burden of oneself
And the nothing
before one
And in one's soul
Forever.
