This was supposed to be easy
I said,
As I fight the past into a future
That's too short
For both of us to find escape from.
We didn't get to have
The eloquence of time
We always raced to find
What was lost
In our journey
To find each other.
Many races won
On the track field
Fighting only
For what was
Important at the time
But crossing the finish line
Didn't satisfy
The heart and mind
Of the brave.
Now we stand here
Once again
At the starting line
Digging deep
Into the pavement
Worn shoes hugging
And grinding
Into what we know
To be true.
And our only hope is
That we are not too tired
To finish
That we do not succumb to
The failures we struggle with
And that we survive
The unheartened struggle
Of life.
