You & I Poem by Dean Meredith

You & I

We were offered up
By some strange lord
Sent half crazy
By a distant lady

We were spittle
On a blade of grass
Shining in the sunlight
Freezing in the morning

We were young things
Asking why
Asking why us
Passing by in a day

We were hopeful & hopeless
Rarely on our guard
Rarely even praying
Knowing night's haunting grip

We were death stars
With weapons loaded
Ready to end time
So little to offer

We were a few second chances
Running creeks in winter
Bright cheeky flowers in spring
A breeze to live for

We were coded bliss
Love when least expected
A million lonely regrets
Like broken pieces of chalk

We rolled itchily
In haystack dreams
Lived on next to nothing
Smiled it all away

We knew none of it
Most of perfect loss
Ate silly & proud
Consummated stories in books

Tried to shine
Without trying
Licked our empty spoons
And dealt bullshit
