You Tried To Sing To Me Poem by Aimanu B. Ali

You Tried To Sing To Me

You tried to sing to me
but no you could not.
Your voice soaked in tears
still echoes in my ears.
My words hurt you I knew
but you had angered me so.
We have drifted apart
two dry leaves
floating downstream.
I search for your face
in the crowded streets
among the strangers.
Sometimes I catch a glimpse
but you are so far
not even like the distant star
I can see it every night.
In the evening breeze
I sniff for your scent.
Sounds of soft footsteps
on the dry scattered leaves
I twirl around heart throbbing
a sweet happy smile
playing on my dry lips
ready to welcome you
with a moist kiss,
the smile now a smothered sob.
The night creeps in silently
embracing fondly your memory.
The air in the room heavy
with the soundless sighs.
A restlessness sets in
like waves on a summer sea.
I am chasing a shadow.
Sometimes I wonder
if you are waiting too
for me to reach out
grasp your hand fingers locked
and once more resume
our walk side by side.
