Richard Netherland Cook Poems

Sitting in the front porch swing,
With a cool wind in your face,
Can cause one to dream.
Of another time and place.
...

Happiness
You can't pursue happiness and catch it;
Happiness does not depend or start
With what happens outside of you,
...

The journey of life is just a path.
On earth to lead our way,
A place to stop and rest awaile,
For we were never meant to stay.
...

The old barn now stands deserted,
Down next to the water well,
Alone in a field of grass and weed,
By the old sign that says, 'For Sale'.
...

Our hearts are sad and empty
Since you went away
The sadness stays within us
With every passing day.
...

They are a band of brother's,
Who risk their lives for others,
They who choose to answer the call,
Stand up for country and give their all.
...

Little eyes are watching you
Each and every day,
And little ears are listening too
Every word you say.
...

Oh, what joy my eyes behold
To see such beauty there unfold,
And my heart with pleasure fills
When sun from ebbing winter days
...

I went out to the sea
And sat there by the shore
Among the cragged rocks and sand,
And all the ocean roar.
...

I sailed upon the sea of life
In the year Nineteen Hundred and Thirty Four
Bound for places far from home,
And steered a course yet unknown
...

A winter night is creeping,
Up to my cottage door,
And I have calmly settled in,
Like many times before.
...

The evening moon shinning high,
Cast its' light on the dead that lay,
Out over the fields and woods nearby,
Some in blue and some in gray.
...

I went out to that place of stones,
Where dear ones lay deep below,
And I begged the cool earth to release,
The sweet faces I used too know,
...

A Perfect Rose

So deep and pure, the one I chose
From this earthly garden. a perfect rose,
...

A Dirt Road

Somewhere there is a dirt road
Long and narrow and traveled much,
...

When My Time Has Come

When my time has come and I am lying,
In a quite place of rest,
...

Love is giving, love is kind,
Love is gentle, love is blind.

Love is meek, love is bold,
...

Years in Heaven have you spent,
Among the Angels so content,
Yet no voice or whisper has come down,
To tell us of the wonder found.
...

IN the wee small hours of Christmas morn,
While parents are in their bed sleeping,
In the dim light of the Christmas Tree,
Two shadowy forms are creeping.
...

I'll be there in the springtime
For I love that part of year,
I'll be the sunshine on the flowers.
I'm in the wind you hear.

The Front Porch Swing

Sitting in the front porch swing,
With a cool wind in your face,
Can cause one to dream.
Of another time and place.

Back when times were simple,
Times you cannot replace,
Life was easy going then,
People moved a slower pace.

Swinging in the old porch swing,
Troubles seemed to fade,
And the problems of the day,
Could somehow be delayed.

The perfect place to sit and talk,
Are to wild away the hours,
To breath in all the country air,
And smell the garden flowers.

Sitting in the swing at twilight,
As darkness comes along,
Watching all the lightning bugs,
Listening to the crickets song.

Maybe your dear Grandma,
Sat in the swing with you,
And told you many stories,
Of all the things she knew.

There was always lots of gossip,
Coming from the old porch swing,
When neighbors got together,
You might hear most anything.

When I think of the old porch swing,
And all it does impart.
It leaves me with fond memories,
And a warm place in my heart.
