(Wellington, New Zealand)

In One Summer's Day

Down in the prairie:

A hissing snake in the garden
Begging Eve for a pardon
A cat slumbers in the hay
Mice begging her away

Up in the mountains:

A feathering eagle in the nest
Awaits its meal with eagle's quest
A creek murmurs down the vale
Fish assembles behind its veil

In the heavens:

A crumb from God's table
Feeds the entire creation
A crumb from my table
Ants in frenzy elation

In my bedroom/bathroom

Fresh silk sheets adore my bed
An empty wallet aches my head
Toilet paper assembled on a roll
My stomach shed in the bowl

poet Dante Gabriel Rossetti

Know'st thou not at the fall of the leaf
How the heart feels a languid grief
Laid on it for a covering,
And how sleep seems a goodly thing
