The Angel of London

I was at a summer festival
When I first met her
Listening to some random crap band
Wondering if my money had been wasted
And feeling rather cynical
About life and youth in general

Straight from another conversation
She moved on to me
Saying hello and asking if I was OK
With no hint of the avalanche that followed

We got talking
Or rather
Talking got us
Everything from music to politics
Fashion to feminism
What she thought and how she felt
And I added what I could
Whenever she left a gap

She used phrases like “my working class background”
And talked about how greed ruins music
Without any false modesty
Or vile arrogance
And never seemed phased for a moment
That she was talking to a complete stranger

When everyone I know is dreaming
She was awake
And when everyone talks at me
She talked to me

She said she should have lived in the 60’s
And she was right
She was a flower-powerful
Che-Guevara-from-London
With an attitude that knew change shall come.

She said she was studying to be a fashion designer
She said she wanted to make clothes
That help people be who they are
Not become someone else
A lantern in the dark
For all the anorexic teenage girls
And middle-aged men with beer-bellies and back hair

This isn’t the kind of girl that just waves flags and shouts slogans
This is the kind of girl that jumps in front of the king’s horse
And won’t ever give up her bus seat

As quickly as she came
She said she had to go
And vanished before I could get a surname or number
And as she walked off into the night
I snapped back to reality
Or rather
Back away from it
And knew I had been visited
By the angel of London
