El Centro

The drive was silent,
as the landscape whizzed by,
in flashes as brief as butterscotch,
cacti, dunes, desert doves
in search of olive branches,

and cell towers disguised
as palm trees. The answer
was alfalfa, and it was not
irrelevant that you asked
the question at the exact moment

I wondered if you knew. Still
blinded by rage, conversation
should not have been
a contact sport on that chilly
morning, distant as the milky way.
