In old school house yard at Ruby a dark brown shorthorn cow
And leghorn pullets cackling beneath the cypress bough
This school must hold good memories and memories live somehow
Here in their lunch hour children played but where are those children now? .

Where the wild waves of Pacific keep on rumbling ceaselessly
Phillip Island or San Remo, Cape Paterson or Inverloch
Just a small house by the ocean on a quarter acre block.

Old Joe in the house at the corner for five years he has lived on his own
And he has lived all of his life in the district and all over the town he is known
He doesn't have a T.V. or radio doesn't even have a telephone
Those would be of little use to him for he is as deaf as a stone.

In a neighbor's house a party going to where i live quite near
The music and the laughter loud on the eve of the New Year
For a group of not more than twenty they do seem rather loud
It is true a small gathering with alcohol involved becomes as noisy as a big crowd

In Spring and Summer i see and hear them every day
To human dwellings always happy to live near
In backyards they chirp every day of the year

Not the prettiest of birds but they are widely known
The gray and brown house sparrows have a charm of their own
Introduced by humans to Countries almost Worldwide
Birds who are happy to live near where people reside

On the shed rafter in her feathery nest in a straggly ball of hay
The brown house sparrow her pea sized speckled eggs does lay
When born her young do cheep for food all through the day
To chirp and chirp that is the sparrow's way

The house sparrows Nature's familiar chirpers in backyards small birds one does see every day
The males with brown heads, gray unders and mottled brown wings and the females of a rather drabber gray
In Spring and Summer they build nests lined with feathers of mostly bits of dry grasses and hay
Untidy looking often under house eaves where pale speckled brown eggs the females does lay

House sparrows the chirpers they are never far
From buildings and human dwellings and where people are
In Spring under house eaves and shed rafters they build their straggly nests of feathers and hay
And from dawn till darkness they chirp all the day

Under the house eaves the sparrows with feathers line their nests of hay
And they chirp from the dawn till gloam of the day
To be the World's greatest feathered chirpers is their claim to fame
They are cheeky by nature and house sparrows by name

She has about her such a happy way
I hear her hearty laughter every day
And with a cheery hello me she greet
The woman in the house across the street.

Beside him even big men they look scrawny and small

And they were brought to Australia from England far away

But good on you for that to you is all I can say
