Winter,
The goddess of the longest nights
Of the netherworld Hades
My days she invades!
Sun shies away from the days:
Unable to stand the cold he retreats
Hesitant to peep in for hours few
Leaves even the dawn's sheenless dew.
She who wraps my passion
In a pall of hibernation,
Spews venom, dust and virus
That block my lungs and nerves.
A beat or two of my heart she steals
And leaves a wound that never heals.
Her worms of cold slither into my bed
And my sleep she smothers
Leaving me to gasp for a wisp of air
As if I were in the Stygian waters.
My nights she invades!
Winter,
As she waxes in
Light wanes, days wane.
She litters my pavements
With a gray pall of scales she shed.
Winter,
The goddess of the darkest nights
Of the netherworld Hades
My world she invades!
I now search for a firewall
That her attack can forestall!

(cont.) .. i like the one stanza repetition. effective. i questioned firewall, thinking 'isn't a firewall for slowing/stopping the spread of fire? ' but it is also a computer term and also has the definition: an insurmountable barrier. i should have had firewalls/Chinese walls against my first three wives! ! ! (that is, partly, a joke) to MyPoemList. very nice. bri :)
Hi My Dear Word-o-Phile PoemHunter is playing truant with me again, for I did not get a message on you comments on this poem. So I only noticed comments today. Sorry about that. Thank you reading this poem. This is a pretty old poem penned when I was living in Delhi, where pollution makes life miserable for an asthmatic, especially in winter. (Continued)
Part 2 In KeralA, the Southern tip of India, we have so-called Mediterranean climate, where the four defined seasons are least pronounced. What we have is the Rainy Season and the Non-Rainy season. Two Monsoons regulators visit us. The South west monsoonal Rains start by 1st June and lasts for two to three months. The South East Monsoon would last for about a month in October- November. And we get Rains occasionally, even in the Non-Rainy Season too. (Continued)
Part 3 Apart from the two seasons I wrote about, we have two springs. One, immediately after the SW monsoon, during August September. We have our Most important Spring-Harvest festival, Onam, during this spring.
Part 4 The second spring comes during April. Here we have another festival of spring, flowers and Fruit. It is called Vishu. This one normally overlaps Easter. Sorry again, I wrote at such length about this place, which everyone calls, God's Own Country.
