#210 What Am I To Think? Poem by Jimmie Arrington

#210 What Am I To Think?

It’s not just you, it’s everyone,
Every girl I’ve ever known.
They speak of love, the moon, the sun,
But only while we’re alone.

They talk of joy and happiness,
Of hopes for future things,
Then suddenly they speak much less
And retract their hearts’ with strings.

They offer their hands in shadows,
Their lips they pledge in secret,
But when the first light of day shows,
They conveniently forget.

Together we share Love’s embrace,
We hold each other tight,
But quickly she demands her space
As others come into sight.

They care too much what others think
And not much about me.
They’ll push me closer to the brink
Before speaking honestly.

And what am I to think of this?
Why can’t they understand?
When they do this they taint each kiss
And create a broken man.

It’s not just you, it’s everyone,
Each girl who swears they love me.
They dedicate their hearts but none
Say why they’re ashamed of me.
