.5. Steaming Dreaming Poem by David Threadgold

.5. Steaming Dreaming

Back in the nineteen fifties
As a lad I was a dreamer
The favourite thing I dreamt of
Was to sail the paddle steamer

We’d all pile in the sidecar
Dad checked his points and plugs
Then mum and dad climbed on the bike
Both covered up their lugs

Hatches had been battened down
Four kids sat quiet to wait
Must reach New Holland early
Lincoln Castle won’t be late

A kick & rev then off we go
We lean at every turn
Stop jumping up and down dad said
With face that looked quite stern

We made it to the ferry
Having ran to catch the steamers
That took us all the way to Hull
With the other steamer dreamers
