A Cruel Society Poem by Sudipta Bhattacharyya

A Cruel Society

I was trudging along the deserted street,
The street seemed to me the dirtiest one
I had ever walked, filthy atmosphere,
Claustrophobic city appeared to me
The cruelest city of the world.
Beggars were resting under the bare sky
Without any clothes to cover themselves.
What I have been dreaming now, a
Declassified society, a society made
For equality, a society full of peace and
Harmony, a society free from jealousy,
Hatred, bigotry, injustice, cruelty, and above All universal brotherhood, I want a society
Where people can live in peace, Irrespective of caste, creed and religion.
But, Alas! People have become so cruel,
So self-centered that the breach between
Two different people are poles asunder.
Observing my city at a night, my tears
Rolled down my cheeks, frustrated as I am
Hide my blushed face upon my pillows.
