A Fly And A Writer Poem by Jan Oskar Hansen

A Fly And A Writer

The fly and a writer

I was thinking of flies (Diptera) . Wikipedia was of no help
wanted to understand why they existed?
I remembered a yellow fly was not a good colour for an insect.
I thought of a famous Norwegian writer when 75
decided to commit suicide.
Bought sleeping pills and bottles of cheap champagne
invited friend to witness his end.
For each mouth full of the cheap stuff, he swallowed a pill
fell asleep among empty bottles and stale cigarette smoke
his mates had gone home.
In despair jumped out of the window, and an awning took the fall
and he lived for another ten years.
As for the fly, it walked willfully across the screen and grabbed it
between thumb and index finger, on the terrace, I let it soar away
to live for another day.
