A Grateful Nod Poem by Theresa Ann Moore

A Grateful Nod

Lydia was born with a smile that delighted everyone
Her golden hair frame her face with heavenly curls
As she grew everyone she met became mesmerized
Her presence is a gift from God… she is a lustrous pearl

Growing with a healthy appetite… she began to crawl
Exploring and learning first words… glad to be alive
Days later her giggles softened and her skin yellowed
Doctors informed... a liver transplant was needed to survive

The search was started looking for a donor…those available
were not compatible… Lydia weakened, she didn't cry
Tubes were attached as well as monitors relaying information
Her vigilant white-haired grandmother stayed by her side

Words flowed as grandmother stroked the sedated baby's head
Speaking softly…giving comfort in a place that was strange
As the sun was rising the parents asked grandmother to leave
Go home and get some rest…we'll call if there is any change

Days passed as the family took turns relieving each other's shifts
As time dwindled… prayers of hope were never set aside or lost
How long do we have… doctor responded, you don't want to know
Within the hour a call came in… there was a match, but at what cost

Somewhere grieving parents have made the ultimate sacrifice
donating organs of their precious child who's soul returned to God
The surgery was successful and Lydia is now gaining strength
Once again smiling, as grandmother gives a grateful skyward nod
