A Lonely Office On The Hilltop Poem by Charlene Chan

A Lonely Office On The Hilltop

Surrounded by trees and dashing cars,
stood a low-rise building,
lonely, in the middle of nowhere.

Pass by the dark corridors,
a guard with a blank face
peep carefully through the glass,
surprised to see a young girl sharing his space
laughing in his eyes, 'poor kid! '

Room without tables,
Desks without chairs,
Drawers without stationeries,
New but empty.

It is noisy
with the sneeze and snore of the aircon,
the clang of the dangling keys,
the creepy beeps of the lifts,
and the rushing steps of the busy staff.

But it is quiet
with no lectures,
no laughter,
nobody.

A lonely girl sits in the empty office,
sips from her cup of chilled hot latte,
stares at the phone that will never ring.
Tik, tok,
the two hands walk too slowly today.
