A Quarter Inch Closer Poem by Mark Heathcote

A Quarter Inch Closer

A quarter inch closer and I can
Touch the stars and moon
Smell a chamomile lawn
Her cotton dress she threw off the loom.

A millimetre nearer and I can
Unfasten her camisole bra.
Wear her scent like a night flower.
And take flight like a jackdaw.

Fender to chrome-lit fender, we can
Cheek to cheek, touch souls.
Loop around the universe
And later head on back home.

Where now some distance apart
I can feel my heart like a feral cat.
Purring and pumping out of my chest
Dreaming of the day I go back to her habitat.
