A Shining Babe Poem by Elias Uddin

A Shining Babe

Rating: 5.0

Up in the sky
Very very high
The moon goes on smiling.

Down on mother's lap -
Clap! clap! clap! -
The baby goes on shining.

With the baby's light
Darkness lost the fight;
The world goes on glowing.

Up in the heaven
All's been joy-driven;
Merriment goes on flowing.

This is a delightful poem. It's filled with what Matthew Arnold called SWEETNESS AND LIGHT, The sweetness is displayed in the confident expression of joy which links heaven and earth and everything in between. The baby whose spontaneous joy is infectious proves that everything is equally lit so that it shines if not brightly, at least truly. The Victorian English poet Matthew Arnold mainly wrote cautionary poems, characterized by a sincere desire for a better world but little hope it might happen. He said his age was caught between two worlds, ONE DEAD, THE OTHER STRUGGLING TO BE BORN. I feel that also describes the early 21st century. Your poem lifted my spirits, and I only mention these doubts about our world to emphasize the importance of your poem of affirmation and delight. I will keep the image of the clapping baby in my mind as a protection against dark thoughts.

I love the simplicity and beauty in this poem. I have two grandbabies and one on the way. Babies are pure innocence and remind me of all that is good in the Universe.
