A Smile - Poem by Kelly Kurt

See the transparent shield of indifference
The repelling force that separates men?
Faces, just faces
Minds, thoughts, lives, a wealth of diversity
What has time taught us to be?
No man can exist as an isolated entity
Not caring, aloft or in a pit
Contained within himself
A smile
The piercing shell that shatters the shield
The irrepressible force that binds our hearts
Names, not just faces
Shared thoughts, ideas and a mutual concern
All links in a chain, dependent upon the strength of unity
No one better, none worse
A smile
Hope

Kelly, this is so very true. Sometimes I feel as though I am the only person who feels this way. Seeing your poem is certainly reassuring. It reminds me so much of a poem that I wrote myself a few years ago called 'Freundlichkeit.' It reminds me so much that I just found it and uploaded it to PH.... funny how things go by so fast isn't it...? (Report) Reply

Life is a fleeting thing. Smiles slow it down for a bit. Thanks, John

There is much wisdom in this poem. We all need each other. We are connected by unseen threads, and we can hurt each other or be caring and kind. That is our choice. And to see someone smile does bring hope. Very nice thoughts contained in your poem. (Report) Reply

Many strangers avert their eyes when approaching each other. I always give a smile.
I like to think that it brightens their day a little and that they will pas it on.
