Vous qui celebrez le passe,
Qui avez explore l'exterieur, les surfaces des races, la vie qui
s'est montree,
Qui avez traite de l'homme comme la creature de la politique, des
ensembles, des dirigeants et des pretres,
Moi, habitant des Allegenes, en le traitant comme il est en lui-meme et en ses propres droits'
Appuyant sur le pouls de la vie qui s'est rarement exhibite,
Chanteur de la Personnalite, dessinant ce qui est encore a arriver,
Je projette l'histoire de l'avenir.

Whitman explores here the differences between a historian and a poet in the ways in which they study man and society. The historian looks at the surface, groups of men, and ways of governing: the poet, Whitman, emphasizes more individuality, human rights, and Personality. The poet projects 'the history of the future.' It is an earlier example of 'back to the future'. It is true that Walt Whitman knows a great deal about the past of his country, and also that he gazes like a seer into the future: he is unique in American poetry.
