Accords 2011.38. Poem by Michael Walker

Accords 2011.38.

Rating: 5.0

J'ai dit la semaine derniere
pas de travail
apres six heures et demie;

je l'ai revise depuis
six heures du soir- pas plus tard-
'Un Tour-

d'Alouette non pas de Chouette',
je ne veux pas
la compagnie des etrangers,

pas apres la tombee de la nuit;
pour neuf heures, je peux
parler a moi-meme

et personne ne m'entend par hasard.
Alors pour dix heures,
au Paradis.

-' Chords 2011.38.Sam Hunt.'Knucklebones. Poems 1962-2012', p.321.

38.

I said last week
no going to work
after six-thirty;

revised it since:
six p.m.- no later-
'A Lark-

Not-an- Owl Tour',
don't want
the company of strangers,

not after dark;
by nine, able
to talk to myself

and no one overhearing.
Then by ten,
in Heaven.

-Sam Hunt.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
At 70, hunt scaled down his tours of New Zealand. He was too old to keep touring.He said at first he would not work after 6: 30 then it became 6: 00pm. He did not want to be in the company of strangers after nightfall. At 9: 00 he can talk to himself without anyone overhearing. By 10: 00 he is in heaven. The word 'Heaven' is a powerful ending to me.
I recently bought Colin Hogg's late-in-life interviews of Hunt. It is titled, appropriately, ' Off The Road'.
