Accords 2011.4. Poem by Michael Walker

Accords 2011.4.

En vieillissant(est-ce qu'ils veulent dire)
soyez discret:
pas bien qu'un vieil homme
annonce aux gens de la rue

son amour pour une femme
plus jeune que sa fille;
ou qu'on le voit plus tard, hors de Pahi,
marcher sur l'eau.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
The poem is about an older man-S. Hunt-who realizes that with age you have to be discreet. Society for the most part frowns on an older man being in love with a young lady, younger than his own daughter. It used to be called 'robbing the cradle'. Nor they would they like seeing him off Pahi beach 'walking on water'. The last line has impact. You could think of Christ walking on water, himself doing the same, or his own happiness through his love affair that he feels he's 'walking on water'.
I see clearly that a short poem-as with Manhire and Turner-can say a great deal in few words. The short poem is a real art form.
