Advice For The Young At Heart Poem by Paula Glynn

Advice For The Young At Heart

We all live on this earth and grow old
We all have a broken heart we once sold
But we all faithfully love and hopefully learn
We all cruelly live and painfully learn
And we all make sacrifices and we burn
But our mistakes make us wise
But our mistakes make us know better.

We view that stranger with different eyes
We no longer feel any surprise
When we read others mistakes in the newspaper
When we chat to that passenger on the bus
When we hear stories of people playing rough
When we see people take that illegal white stuff
Spending time in prison not appealing to the sane.

It is all pure poison, it is all anarchy
We are the ones who don't know others
When they become much more deadly rough
Their social lives about hanging tough
And when they've had enough
You will know all about it
You will know the meaning of paying your way.

But the cruel night does always end
You greet the morning and don't need to pretend
To be glad to be alive knowing you've survived
You are stronger within yourself
Your heart you never again sell
For self-respect is going on today
As you look up at the lord in church and pray.

You have to fill your heart with love
Where you accept yourself and stay young in your heart
Because you can fall in love again
On someone else you can faithfully depend
And if that love falls through
You can open your heart and begin again
The angels with a message of love they send.

Those childish tricks fall into the ditch
And you are left free to direct your own life
To make that plan and make a realistic pitch
Your personal hopes and dreams to come true
No matter what has happened in the past
No matter what you now do
For this is my advice to the young at heart:

To yourself always accept your emotions and be true
To yourself be brutally honest yet kind
Notice your surroundings and see clearly: to not be blind
For the blind are never free
But you have your own eyes: let them guide you
Let the words of the angels be beside you
Like the stars that shine diamonds upon you.
