Affirmation Poem by Mary Angela Douglas

Affirmation

I lift my aching head again
and wonder what's the world I'm in
why goodness should assaulted be
and in the name of liberty
I gather up what's left to mend
broke in two by charlatans
and how the former dream to heal
the former dream and all that's real
is my undimmed preoccupation
by God, enlightened, in utter darkness now
I see the victors over nothing smile
still flames the night with infinite candelabra
when second sight is given
and I see all in floods of light
and not the heart that's riven.
go your ways like ghosts uncomprehending
I will believe
in Happy Endings.
