Airplane Sutra Poem by Alexandra Reiss

Airplane Sutra

It's not even a cute baby—
No cherubic redeeming qualities,
Just drool, set on course through
Gummy gap-toothed no return.

How long did they say the flight was?

Jammed thigh to thigh, at least
Drinks are free.

Neighbor, are you as uncomfortable as I?
Every shift in seat, spill of drink.

GASP

I must reach down,
to grab my fallen book, such a mundane gesture
turned - b a l a n c i n g a c t -

Spare me the sideways glance—
For it was not I who brought the baby
Or the ethnic food.

Ha! I can feel the discomfort and little annoyances that make a flight into a desperate journey of akwardness.
