main ne dher bharay kapDay dhoey
aur un ko litka diya sooknay k liyay,
fir main shehar main chali gayi
sara din bin fursat rehi.
jab car se vapis aaee
teri kameez ki baahaiN
utheen tyohaar mananay k liyay
aur hamaray sonay waalay kapDay
halki behti hawaa main
aapis main milay julay
aur fir alag ho gayey.

mere liyay dair ho rehi thee;
jahan tum thay, koi dair na thee.
chowdweeN ka chaand poora tha
magar titar-bittar baadloN main aisa na laga.
teray bistray ka hissa baDa baDa laga
jaisay Kansas ki sum-bhumi ho;
tera takia, phoola phoola thanda sa tha
vyanjana-poorn main....

I washed a load of clothes
and hung them out to dry.
Then I went up to town
and busied myself all day.
The sleeve of your best shirt
rose ceremonious
when I drove in; our night-
clothes twined and untwined in
a little gust of wind.

For me it was getting late;
for you, where you were, not.
The harvest moon was full
but sparse clouds made its light
not quite reliable.
The bed on your side seemed
as wide and flat as Kansas;
your pillow plump, cool,
and allegorical...
