An Old Tradition - Poem by Hasmukh Amathalal

Unwillingly ushered in a house totally unknown
Saw a young lady keeping head down
White complexioned girl with eyes cat brown,
Almost frozen expressions but not making it known

I was at pained to learn the way it was arranged in orthodox way
Grown up children still are not allowed sufficient say,
Uncertainty is more so prediction is very less,
What is there in store for assumptions and guess?

With great courage one may ask “hello”
Limited conversation in presence and all the traditions to follow
Parents are present and allowing limited talks
Nothing can be decided with few steps walks

”I am your would be companion”
Running a marathon race but not a champion,
Will allow all the freedom that you need,
No dowry or nothing as I have no greed,

“Will you marry me” simply I asked,
Rushed blood heavily on face as it was difficult task mask,
Wait for an answer and okay the proposal,
Parents too were ready for quick disposal,

Quick “yes” came from her as there was no competition
Answer was kept ready even without question,
”so stage is ready for lovely meet” I smilingly said
parent were happy and agreed to greet,

I did not, object to old style
It was unique experience for a while
How can one agree for old ways?
If that results into parting ways

How can one decide future in few hours?
Heart may skip beats while walking on floor
It is unusual way of finding a match
Sometimes it may result into very good precious catch

It may have long lasting effect on mind
Lovely moments with few surprises to find
It is lovely to find and feel so great
When bond results into reality from heat

I shall always cherish and remember
Its importance as to how life will bear
I have to assure her nothing to fear
As she was almost sank with tears

As it turned out to be a great success
They all agreed for tie without any stress
It was now matter of time to decide
I was dreaming about horse to ride

This may not happen to all
They may not receive such call
I wish it could take place for bride
She can explain with no emotions to hide

Day for final count down may arrive,
simple way to wed and not to connive,
It’s way of life with certain norms to follow,
promise once made should not seem to be hollow
