Annie Lennox: Diva Poem by Paula Glynn

Annie Lennox: Diva

Annie Lennox born in 1954 as a Christmas baby
Her parents Dorothy Farquharson and Thomas Allison Lennox
Proud parents knowing their daughter's destiny
Knowing their daughter was going to be a star
Annie's roots in Aberdeen in Scotland a place never too far
A place Annie will always call home
Even though on musical tours and the world she does roam.

Her mother to be a cook and her father
Doing hard work as a welder in the local shipyard
Annie kindly disciplined and growing strong
Her Scottish roots evident in her music which is a must
Starting out as the famous Eurythmics in the 1980's
Band member Dave Stewart adding magical gold dust
To all their hits that did dominate the charts not going wrong.

Learning to play the piano at three years old
Annie in later childhood years taking lessons
Learning to play the flute at eleven years old
Annie had a feeling she would hit gold
Six years old when she did join a choir feeling bold
Her powerful voice unique when music took a hold
Annie's parents encouraging her musical practices.

At age 17 she attended the Royal Academy of Music
Playing classical flute, piano and harpsichord
Having earned a well-deserved scholarship
Sadly too disillusioned to complete her course
But she learnt a lot perhaps though with some regret
Still, Annie Lennox would dominate the charts for decades
Her musical practices influencing her excellent solo work.

Her first solo album "Diva" a top ten hit
Work people will always love and never dismiss
Annie singing with a beautiful and loud melodic voice
People paying attention to her stage performances
Loving her fun and vivacious makeup and hair looks
Annie experimental with fashion and with a passion
Annie watched on YouTube nowadays like it was just yesterday.

Seeking out singing jobs with local bands
Annie did eventually meet up with Dave Stewart who did stand
Work at that vegetarian restaurant in Hampstead forgotten
They began collaborating as a duo in 1977
Their band called The Catch: to be renamed The Tourists
Success with songs "The Loneliest Man in the World" in 1979
The song to be followed by "So Good to Be Back Home Again" a sign

Their biggest hit being a cover of Dusty Springfield's
"I Only Want to Be with You" in 1979 with Annie a young age
Annie shy offstage but super confident on stage
Her later band with Dave Stewart named after
A system of musical instruction that involves bodily movements
The Eurythmics created when Annie and Dave would
Experiment with a synthesizer in a hotel room in Australia.

Album "In The Garden" released in 1981
Unfortunately resulting in low sales having wanted hit number one
Leaving the duo disheartened and let down
But "Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This) " removing that frown
Would catapult their career in 1983 into
The Billboard Hot 100 Chart in America without a fight
Their destiny to happen spectacularly into the spotlight.
