Apocalyptic Interlude Poem by Doris Cornago

Apocalyptic Interlude

Rating: 3.0

A man out of time struggles with baskets
Barefooted, yet not a look of despair
Patiently, hardened arms grasp
Baskets full of yellow rocks
Beneath him magnificent
Turquoise sulfur lake
Of Kawah Ijen
Languidly
Nests
In
Sheer
Crater
Walls before
Appointed time
An hour after 12
Briskly walking as
Clouds roll in like a
Shadowy monster arising
Bearing Apocalytic Interlude
Purest sulfur for mankind's good
Despite the horrendous labor involved

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
The magnificent turquoise sulfur lake of Kawah Ijen lies at 2148m above sea level and is surrounded by the volcano's sheer crater walls. Sulfur collectors hike up in the morning and return around 1 pm when the clouds roll in. My friend told me about what he has seen and I can only reflect on what amount of labor is involved. Yet, he cannot see complaint nor despair in their faces, but one of stoic duty, free from passion, unmoved by joy or grief, and submitting to what must be done daily.
COMMENTS OF THE POEM
Doris Cornago 29 July 2017

When you see someone working so hard to provide for the daily needs of his family, you are convicted that despite the luxuries you enjoy, there is lack of tranquility in your heart. Perhaps, you need to see more of rural villages, how people lived with barest of necessities to learn what being civilized means.
