As-Salamu Alaykum! He Greeted Me Poem by Mohammad Younus

As-Salamu Alaykum! He Greeted Me

As-salamu alaykum! He greeted me,
as my True self approached me.
'I'm here for you, I am your essence.'
A simple, yet shattering statement.

'But how can I be you? '
I pleaded.
'I made your job easier! '
'No problem, rest easy, kid.'
He pointed toward my soul.

But as I gazed at my false self,
worry began to fill me.
'Take me with you! ' I begged,
falling to my knees,
hands folded in prayer.
'No. It's not yet your time, '
He stepped back
and turned away from me.

'But I want to be my True self.'
I muttered, chasing after him.
As I ran, my soul seemed to slip
like quicksand beneath my feet.
'H-hey! Help me! '
I cried, but the grim True self
walked onward.
'I know you hear me! '
I murmured.

In a flash, he turned around.
'So you do want to be Me then?
You don't want to drown?
If you seek freedom,
you must say 'No'
to all the temptations
of your false self.'

'I will do, I will do...'
And then he lifted me,
raising me from the ground,
lifting, lifting,
forever lifting—
to Him, to the One
I had sought.
I am so grateful to Him.
