Astonishment Poem by Barry Middleton

Astonishment

the poet held no malice
he was what he was
and he lifted his chalice

he stood at the precipice
that was the frontispiece
of all allusion to illusion

his imagined imagining
the work of solitary mind
was not admonishment

it was not condemnation
of the old or of the new
it was only what he felt

it was his astonishment
the rose frosted in ice
the relentless fire of war

a view that was his view
that this alone is poetry
was all of what he knew

Verse by verse. I lift a toast to poetry. I take a chance at the edge or a cliff toasting to poetry - allusion to illusion. My poetry is not an admonishment of anyone else's work. It is not a condemnation of classical or modern works - my poetry is only my feelings. My poetry is about my astonishment at the world in which we live - the rose in ice, relentless war, everything astonishing. On the precipice that is poetry, I write what I see and to me this is poetry. To me emotional honesty is the first rule of poetry. I don't always achieve it but I try. I hope my explanation helps you get closer to an understanding of this poem. It is one of my favorites.
