At The Grave Of The Fallen Hero Poem by Francis Duggan

At The Grave Of The Fallen Hero

At the grave of the fallen hero The Last Post has been played
But he was not there this morning to march in the big war parade
And he had to give his young life for to become a great name
And he does not know where he lay of his glory and his fame
He did not live to father children and for to grow old and gray
He was brought home a dead hero from a war zone far away
He has lost his life in battle the greatest gift he did possess
At his death his grieving mother is bereft of happiness
One of many dead war heroes life without him does go on
He did not live to grow old and talk of his better days long gone
Many lives have to be sacrificed for a war for to be won
And many a mother left to grieve for her fallen soldier son
At the grave of he fallen hero The Last Post has been played
But he was not there this morning for to march in the parade.
